Spain offers an interesting case study regarding the implementation of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) programmes due to its previous experiences with its minority languages, namely Catalan in Catalonia, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands. This paper aims to link the implementation of CLIL programmes with the language planning policies carried out in these autonomous regions to restore the status of Catalan. During the last two decades, these territories have fostered CLIL-like methodologies and have obtained good results. However, CLIL was recently generalised in the mainstream education systems in the Valencian Community and in the Balearic Islands, and this has created social conflicts. A close examination of political and social events related to this development shows that they are due to the fact that CLIL has been used to further political interests and to avoid the debate about the “normalisation” of Catalan. This, among other consequences, endangers the continuity and the credibility of the CLIL programmes which until now have been successfully implemented. Furthermore, in Catalonia, where public language policies have focused on the “normalisation” of Catalan, the implementation of CLIL is still anecdotal and it does not guarantee a coherent continuity from one academic level to the next one.
L’Espagne nous ofre des exemples intéressants en ce qui concerne l’implémentation de programmes EMILE vis-à-vis ses expériences avec les langues régionales tel que le Catalan en Catalogne, la Communauté Valencienne et les Îles Baléares. Le but de cette publication est de relier l’implémentation des programmes EMILE avec les politiques linguistiques appliquées dans ces communautés autonomes pour revitaliser le statut du Catalan. Pendant les deux dernières décennies, ces territoires ont promu la méthodologie EMILE achevant de bons résultats. Cependant, EMILE a été récemment généralisé dans tout le système éducatif aux Îles Baléares et à la Communauté Valencienne, ce qui a déclenché des confits sociaux. Un examen exhaustif des événements politiques et sociaux montre que la méthodologie EMILE a été utilisée pour des intérêts politiques et pour éviter le débat de la « normalisation » du Catalan ce qui, parmi d’autres conséquences, met en danger la continuité et la crédibilité des programmes implémentés avec succès jusqu’à présent. Outre cela, en Catalogne, où les politiques linguistiques publiques ont mis l’accent sur la « normalisation » du Catalan, l’implémentation des programmes EMILE est toujours anecdotique et sa continuité n’est pas forcement garantie d’un niveau académique au suivant.
