In the sphere of traditional historiography, the six year revolutionary period has been considered as one of the most destructive of the Ecclesiastical, Historical and Artistic Patrimony in Spain, which in turn represented a major part of the National Patrimony. However, some cultural and social sectors of society augured the political institutions to promulgate a series of protective measures like those which were taken during the provisional government of General Serrano (1869) or the bill set out by Emilio Castelar 1873, which became a true precedent in the guardianship of the Spanish ecclesiastical patrimony.
