Ip talks about Dick Cavett, who isn't the first hardnosed reporter who comes to mind when people think of the Watergate scandal. Probably because he wasn't so much a capital-J journalist as a cornball-yet-erudite talk-show host. Broadcasting from the Watergate Committee hearing room, Cavett asked senators what they thought of criticisms that their investigation was a little toothless, flabby, and inept.
