A difícil conjuntura económica atual tem vindo a promover um maior foco na Qualidade no sector hoteleiro. O presente estudo pretende: analisar o impacto da implementação da ISO 9001 no desempenho das organizações desse sector; verificar se os benefícios diferem de acordo com a classificação dos estabelecimentos e se tendem a surgir a longo prazo; verificar se a versão mais recente da ISO produz maior impacto do que as versões mais antigas; e ainda identificar os principais motivos para a não certificação. Com base numa amostra de 112 estabelecimentos hoteleiros portugueses, os resultados mostram que a implementação da ISO 9001 contribui com importantes melhorias nas várias métricas de avaliação de desempenho. Os resultados não mostraram existir uma relação entre o impacto da certificação e a classificação dos estabelecimentos hoteleiros, e que os benefícios da implementação não tendem a surgir a longo prazo. Concluiu-se também que a ISO 9001:2008 produz um maior impacto no desempenho do que a versão de 2000, e que os elevados custos da implementação constituem o principal motivo para a não certificação.
The current global financial crisis has been promoting a greater focus on quality in the hospitality industry. This study aims to: analyze the impact of ISO 9001 implementation in the organization’s performance in this industry; to study if benefits differ according to the hotels’ rating and if they tend to emerge in long-term; to assess if the most recent version of ISO produces a greater impact than the older versions; and finally to identify the main reasons for non-certification. Based on a sample of 112 Portuguese hotels, the results show that ISO 9001 implementation contributes to improvements in several performance measures. No relationship was found between the quality certification’s impact on performance and the hotels’ rating, and that ISO 9001 implementation benefits do not tend to emerge in the long-term. However, ISO 9001:2008 produces a greater impact on performance than the 2000 version, and finally, the high costs of implementation appear to be the main reason for non-certification.
