The low social recognition of the librarian is an enduring issue, that in the “digital era” is accompanied by the widespread forecasts of the “disappearance of the library”. Nevertheless, the professional literature – as the author shows in this article – seems to be rather optimistic regarding the future of libraries (and librarians), on condition that they strive to promote their services and rethink their social role.
