In times of public budget crisis, libraries have to face the challenge of economic sustainability. They should therefore implement fundraising if they want to fulfill their mission. But a successful fundraising comes from a full awareness that, before being a public service, they are a social institution supported by their community. Is this the key to join the world of fundraising rightfully together with humanitarian aid, disability and vulnerable or medical research? Definitely yes, as long as they can build a new covenant with community, getting in tune with its needs and enhancing the value of a huge human capital like people of libraries is.
