In every public library a complete collection of local periodicals is the "heart" of the local history section: in order to create and maintain such a collection, it needs to now how to correctly identify the local periodicals and how to manage them. The article supplies a general assessment of the matter: this first part focuses on printed periodicals; the next part will trat the online ones.
