En este año 2010 se celebran tanto el Bicentenario de Chile como el año internacional de la diversidad biológica. En este comentario describo a la ecología como una ciencia espacial de la realidad ambiental cuya preocupación debiese ser la conservación de la biodiversidad, el patrimonio natural de una nación. Aunque la eco-región del bosque valdiviano del sur de Chile se encuentra entre los 35 �hotspots� prioritarios del mundo, su actual fragmentación es uno de los más importantes factores del así denominado �cuarteto malvado� que la pone en peligro.
Frente a esta situación, postulo que los ecólogos de la conservación de la biodiversidad de esta inmensa región de casi 5 millones de hectáreas tenemos la oportunidad de pasar de ser espectadores a ser actores de nuestra realidad ambiental.
In this year 2010 we will celebrate both the bicentennial of Chile as the international year of biodiversity. In this comment I describe the spatial ecology as a science of the environmental reality which ought to be concern about the conservation of biodiversity, the natural heritage of a nation. Although the Valdivian forest ecoregion of southern Chile is among the 35 priority "hotspots" of the world, its current habitat fragmentation is one of the most important factors in the so-called "evil quartet" that endangers it. Faced with this situation, I postulate that we conservation ecologists of the biodiversity of this vast region of nearly 5 million hectares have the opportunity to move from being spectators to become actors of our environmental reality.
