Per què i quan els homes desenvolupem tecnologia? [ALFONSO GAGO] L'autor exposa, en la primera part de l'article, les fal¿làcies que alguns discursos basats en la neutralitat de la tecnologia desenvolupen en parlar deis efectes que aquesta té sobre la nostra vida quotidiana, en un moment en què el seu dinamisme és incontestable i els canis que provoca són constants. Per començar, l'article diferencia bé els conceptes de técnica i tecnologia, i els relaciona amb la gran diferència que hi ha en aquests aspectes entre l'espècie humana i la resta d'espècies animals. La consciència humana, la capacitat d'aprenentatge acumulat generació rere generació, o el principi de la nostra llibertat, tot plegat introdueix elements que ens diferencien clarament de l'actuació que al llarg de la història han anat desenvolupant altres espècies. La segona part del text comença amb una anàlisi numérica de la manera com el progrés tecnològic ha augmentat exponencialment els darrers anys, i el paral¿lelisme d'aquest fet amb l'augment no lineal de la població del planeta al llarg deis darrers segles. Des d'una òptica personalista, denuncia la manca d'efectes que aquestes grans capacitats tecnològiques que hem desenvolupat tenen sobre l'eradicació de la pobresa al món, en un sistema que ha globalitzat l'economia financera, pero encara no els drets laborais o l'economia del consum.
Why and when do men develop technology? [ALFONSO GAGO] In the first part of the article, the author expounds the fallacies that certain discourses based on the neutrality of technology develop on talking about its effects on our everyday life, at a time when their dynamism is undisputable, and the constant changes this provokes. To begin with, the article distinguishes between the concepts of technique and technology, relating it to the major difference in this regard between the human being and other animal species. Human consciousness, the capacity of learning accumulated generation after generation or the principle of our freedom introduces elements that clearly distinguish us from the way other species have developed throughout history. In the second part of the text, he embarks upon a numerical analysis of how technological progress has increased exponentially over recent years, and how this is paralleled by the non-linear increase of the planet's population in recent centuries. From a personalistic standpoint, he denounces the lack of effect which this great technological capacity we have developed has had on the eradication of poverty in the world, in a system that has globalised the financial economy, but not working rights or the economics of consumption.
