One centenary later [MIQUEL COLL I ALENTORN] January 1925 witnessed the publication of this article in the framework of the fourth centenary of the birth of Luís Vaz de Camões, one of the greatest Portuguese poets. As the author stated at the time, despite the geographical proximity of Portugal, the anniversary went unnoticed. For this reason Miguel Coll i Alentorn dedicated a few words and considerations to the figure of this great poet, to the place he holds in the literature of his country and his relationship with the events of the era in which he lived.
By analysing the reciprocal influences between the cultural movements and the political arena, the words of Miguel Coll take us from the Renaissance, which the poet experienced, to Romanticism, when his figure was recovered. The life of Camòes was an example of honour and cultural and patriotic loyalty; Miguel Coll expounds it as an example, rendering homage to the man who was capable of writing a poem overflowing with enthusiasm and love for a land which paid him poorly for his services. In the words of Coll i Alentorn, the feats of the heroes of the poem Os Lusíadas, which immortalised the name of Camòes, exude all the characteristics of a national odyssey and are a defence of what might be termed the raison d'être of a patriotic identity.
This article presents a parallel between Camões and his nationalism, with direct references to the foundations and the personality of historic nations, as is the case of Catalonia.
Després d'un centenari [MIGUEL COLL I ALENTORN] El mes de gener de 1925 es publicava aquest article en el marc de la celebració del quart centenari de la naixença de Luís Vaz de Camões, un deis més grans dels poetes portuguesos. Tal i com manifesta aleshores l'autor, malgrat la proximitat geogràfica de Portugal, l'aniversari va passar desapercebut. Per aquest motiu Miguel Coll i Alentorn va dedicar unes paraules i consideracions a la figura d'aquest gran poeta, al lloc que ocupa dins la literatura del seu país i a les relacions amb els esdeveniments de l'època en qué visqué.
Mitjançant l'anàlisi de les influencies reciproques entre els moviments culturais i l'esfera política, les paraules de Miguel Coll ens duen des del Renaixement en el qual va viure el poeta fins al Romanticisme en quê es reivindica la seva figura. La vida de Camões fou una mostra d'honor i de fidelitat cultural i pàtria; Miguel Coll l'exposa com a exemple i ret un homenatge a l'home que fou capaç d'escriure un gran poema desbordant d'entusiasme i d'amor envers la terra que tan malament va premiar els seus serveis. En paraules de Coll i Alentorn, les gestes dels herois del poema Os Lusíadas, que va immortalitzar el nom de Camões, revesteixen totes les característiques d'una epopeia nacional i representen l'apologia del que constitueix el que podríem anomenar la raó d'existência d'una identitat patriòtica.
