L'estat del català i l'Estat [ALBERT BRANCHADELL] Està la llengua catalana en perill de mort? Són certs els auguris que vaticinen que ben aviat el català desapareixerà? O, ben al contrari, és cert que mai com ara s'ha parlat tant el català? Que és una llengua de prestigi que té assegurada la seva supervivència entre les llengües més fortes? Aquestes preguntes són el punt de partida de l'article d'Albert Branchadell, prestigiós filòleg i professor de la Universitat de Barcelona. A L'estat del català i l'Estat fa una anàlisi dels nombrosos llibres, articles i estudis que, darrerament, han aparegut publicats i que coincideixen en la gravetat del diagnòstic: l'ús social del català està en retrocés i el seu futur està seriosament amenaçat. A partir d'aquí, el Dr. Branchadell dóna, en primer lloc, arguments que matisen aquest diagnòstic: l'ús social del català està en retrocés i el pronòstic consegüent: el seu futur està seriosament amenaçat; i, en segon lloc, discuteix sobre els remeis que caldria aplicar per a esvair aquesta hipotètica amenaça sobre el futur de la llengua. Entre altres consideracions, opina que cal modificar la posició que ocupa el català en l'àmbit general de l'Estat, i en la seva projecció internacional, i implicar l'Estat en la pervivència de la llengua. Considera que aquesta necessitat es podria inserir en un debat públic ampli per a, més tard, traslladar la discussió al nou Estatut del que molts partits polítics parlen.
The State of Catalan and the State [ALBERT BRANCHADELL] Is the Catalan language in mortal peril? Are the predictions that suggest that Catalan could soon disappear true? Or is it quite the opposite, that never before had Catalan been so widely spoken? That it is a language of prestige whose survival is ensured among the strongest languages? These questions provide the point of departure for the article by Albert Branchadell, a prestigious philologist and lecturer of the University of Barcelona. In The State of Catalan and the State he analyses the numerous books, articles and studies which have recently been published, and which all agree on the seriousness of the diagnosis: the social use of Catalan is diminishing and its future is in serious jeopardy. Firstly, Dr. Branchadell provides arguments to nuance this diagnosis: the social use of Catalan is falling away, with the subsequent prognosis: its future is seriously threatened; and secondly, he addresses the remedies that should be applied to palliate this hypothetic threat to the future of the language. Amongst other considerations, he opines that the position occupied by Catalan in the general sphere of the State must be modified, as well as its international projection, with the State getting involved in the survival of the language. He considers that this need could be brought into a broad public debate and the discussion then taken to the new Statute which many political parties are talking about.
