En el Ecuador, como en el resto de América Latina, la identidad nacional es un proyecto que no cuaja hasta el presente y que cada vez parece ser menos viable, en la medida en que se trata de configurar una identidad homogenizadora y excluyente, mimetizada y deducida, de espaldas al problema étnico y a la diversidad cultural. El hecho colonial no es suficiente para explicar la crisis de identidad de los ecuatorianos; parecería que la principal causa es el mestizaje. Esto se debe a que la población mestiza prefirió asimilarse con la cultura dominante y aprendió una marcha de negación y olvido de lo vernáculo. Por otro lado, los pueblos indígenas han emprendido una lucha por afirmar su presencia, reivindicar sus derechos y demandar una reinterpretación de la historia nacional y de sus historias particulares. La presencia de nueve nacionalidades indígenas y del pueblo multiétnico de los quinchuas da cuenta del carácter pluriétnico del Ecuador y constituye un reto para la construcción de una identidad nacional configurada en base a la unidad de lo diverso y ala recuperación y revalorización de las raíces históricas y culturales ancestrales.
In Ecuador, as in the rest of Latin America, the national identity is a project that hasn't worked out well and that every time seems less viable, as far as forming a homogenised, excluding and mimetic identity is concerned; inferred without taking into account the ethnical problem and the cultural diversity. The "colonial fact" is not enough to express the national identity crisis of the Ecuadorians; it seems that the main reason is " crossbreeding". This is due to the fact that the crossbred population preferred to take in the dominant culture and undertook a refusal trek and forgetfulness of the vernacular. On the other hand, the native people have started a struggle for reassuring their presence, for recovering their rights and of requesting a reinterpretation of national history and their particular histories. The presence of nine native nationalities and of the multiethnic quechuan people tell us the pluriethnic character of Ecuador and constitutes a challenge for the construction of a national identity based on the union of the diverse and the recovery and revaluation of the ancestral historical and cultural roots.
