Purpose. This research aims to analyze the communications of Pope Francis (1936–2025) through the lens of Latin American communication thought and the theoretical work of Paul Ricoeur on metaphor. Methodology. The analysis focuses on the messages composed under his pontificate for World Communications Day (2014–2025). A mixed-method design was implemented in two phases. In the first, quantitative phase, a textual analysis was employed using the software Lingmotif to identify dominant keywords and their emotional polarity. In the second, qualitative phase, metaphorical expressions present both in the titles and in the body of the documents were examined based on cognitive linguistics and interpretative and symbolic hermeneutics. Results and Conclusions. The communications of Pope Francis reflect the style of Latin American communicology shaped by the construction of an existential bond with the addressee and a focus on social change among other aspects. Through the use and design of original metaphors, the receiver of the message is left room to construct the deeper meaning that the message holds for them. Original Contributions. This research establishes a connection between the communicative novelty of Pope Francis and the communicational tradition that informs it—a tradition that remains relatively unknown outside Latin America and beyond the strictly communicational field. Additionally, it reveals that the metaphorical style employed is not merely a formal or stylistic matter, but rather reflects a clear communicative and theological intent.
