Japan has distinguished itself throughout the Contemporary Era through its successful endeavour to project a positive, appealing, and evocative image of its culture and artistic heritage. The opening of Japan during the Meiji period (1868-1912) marked the beginning of this process of cultural fascination through the phenomenon known as Japonisme. Demonstrating a remarkable ability to adapt to the cultural trends of the twentieth century, Japanese influence has continued to consolidate itself up to the present day, largely supported by technological innovation and the global success of its entertainment industries, particularly cinema, manga, animation, and video games. Tradition and modernity have thus been attractively intertwined within a deliberate strategy of soft power and cultural diplomacy. Within this framework, the present study tackles the reception of Japanese culture in Spain.
