During the period of large-scale global migration, millions of people, including Sephardic Jews from the eastern Mediterranean, took the transatlantic migration routes. In doing so, they continued a complex process characterized by features and stages that migration historiography has tended to underestimate by focusing on the experience after arrival in the new place. Using sources such as the archives of the Jewish Distribution Committee, naturalization applications in Colombia, historical Jewish press, and memoirs, this article aims to analyze these aspects of the Sephardic transatlantic migration process in the early decades of the 20th century, taking into account elements such as push factors, desired destinations, travel routes, support mechanisms, and the role of networks, based on an approach that articulates macro-structural and micro-social factors to understand some of the determinants of this migration.
