The period between the 1880s and 1980s can be conceived as the century of the Islamicate periodical. While Muslim book publishing has received far more focused scholarly attention, periodical publishing had significantly different modalities. Such differences included the comparatively cheaper price of periodicals; their wider use of subscription-based models of postal distribution direct to readers; the multiple author and topic profile of their contents; the accentuated role of their orchestrating editors; and the cumulative impact that derived from their seriality. This Afterword considers these factors in relation to the model of center/periphery explored in this special issue of Oriente Moderno so as to chart the contours of the nascent field of Islamicate Periodical Studies.
