Set in a post-apocalyptic world marked by the collapse of natural balance and the dissolution of civil institutions, The Road by Cormac McCarthy offers a reflection on the relationship between responsibility, ethics, and natural law under the extreme conditions of human survival. The journey of the father and the son through a landscape devastated by violence, precariousness, and the regression of social relations allows us to question whether a minimal core of morality can persist even in the absence of positive law and organized political structures. In this perspective, the distinction between the “good guys” and the “bad guys” assumes not only an anthropological dimension, but also an eminently axiological value, as it calls into question the recognition of human dignity and the ethical limits of force. The narrative thus stages the tension between extreme processes of dehumanization, such as cannibalism, and residual forms of solidarity, showing how responsibility toward the other continues to represent the ultimate foundation of authentically human coexistence. Within this framework, references emerge to the main traditions of modern and contemporary legal-philosophical thought concerning natural law, the state of nature, and the ethics of responsibility. The Road therefore appears as a meditation on the survival of universal moral principles beyond the collapse of legal and social order.
