The correspondence courses of the Carles Salvador Center: learning Catalan at a distance during the transition This article aims to reconstruct the history of the founding of the Centre Carles Salvador in 1975 and the correspondence courses that began to be offered there in January 1976: Initiation, Initiation for Spanish Speakers, Basic, Progressive, and Teaching Certificate. The study of this grassroots language planning initiative—launched by civil society—has been made possible thanks to the discovery of previously unpublished documentation and interviews conducted with some of its key figures. The non-formal teaching of the Catalan language in the Valencian Country during the Spanish transition allowed knowledge of the language to spread among segments of the population who, until then, had been illiterate in their own tongue. It marked a pioneering step toward linguistic normalization, a process that would later be formally undertaken by public institutions.
