Future and conditional between mesoclisis and enclisis Future and conditional tenses had two different forms in Old Catalan: the so-called analytical forms, characterized by mesoclisis (cantarlo he) and the so-called synthetic forms, which could appear alone (cantaré) or with proclitic (lo cantaré) or enclitic (cantaré-lo) pronouns. The variation between both constructions is conditioned by the restrictions of clitic placement in the Middle Ages (Sentí & Bouzouita, 2022; Torres-Latorre, 2023a, 2023b; Torres-Latorre & Sentí, 2023), but these restrictions do not explain the whole variation between the two options. In this paper, we analyse the role of (i) verbal conjugation class, (ii) verbal syncope, (iii) rhizotonic verbs, (iv) the number of syllables of the verb, (v) verbal lexeme and (vi) the presence of a non-finite verb after the future or conditional in the variation between mesoclisis and enclisis.
