This article describes the oligarchic foundations of power in Central America, based on the definition of oligarchy as a regime designed to defend wealth. It identifies types of oligarchies based on their degree of involvement in coercion and governance. It adopts an historical-structural method and offers an interdisciplinary critique of the economic-political and political science literature to overcome the ahistorical separation of economy and politics that has prevailed in the analysis of power. The study demonstrates that oligarchy, with its own rules of the game, has been compatible with both democratic and autocratic political regimes, a fact that has given it an enduring character, although it is not without disruptions and variations.
