Analiza el papel que dentro del orden o esquema constitucional, político y jurídico tiene la figura vicepresidencial en América Latina, considerando sus orígenes, funciones y el vínculo institucional que esta guarda con la presidencia de la república, por medio de un estudio comparado referente a las constituciones de países latinoamericanos. Además, se estudia cómo se elige la figura de vicepresidente, y señala la posición de esta en la fórmula del binomio presidencial y sus respectivas funciones (sustantivas o complementarias). Asimismo, incluye los mecanismos para la sucesión o reemplazo en caso de ausencia, desaparición, renuncia o muerte del presidente. El estudio incluye cuadros de categorización que permiten observar similitudes y diferencias entre los distintos regímenes presidenciales existentes en la región.
The article analyses the role of the vice-presidential figure in Latin America within the constitutional, political and legal order or scheme, considering its origins, functions and the institutional link that it has with the presidency of the republic, through a comparative study of the constitutions of Latin American countries. In addition, this paper studies how the figure of vice president is chosen, and indicates its position in the formula of the presidential binomial and their respective functions (substantive or complementary). Likewise, it also includes the mechanisms for succession or replacement in the event of the absence, disappearance, resignation or death of the president. The study includes categorization tables that allow us to observe similarities and differences between the different existing presidential regimes in the region.
