Although the literature has described in detail how university programs in prisons operate and the perceptions of incarcerated students, there is a gap regarding the perceptions of another key actor: the views of the faculty staff have not been explored in the same depth. In a previous article, we analyzed the backgrounds, motivations, and representations of the law professors in the UBA XXII program at the Devoto University Center. On this occasion, we adapted the concept of the extended effects of incarceration (Ferreccio, 2017) to analyse to what extent the university program in prisons, its professors and its students are affected by attending university in prison, basen on their representations of the degree of appreciation of this experience within the Law School, and the impact of the programme on released students.
The research is based on a self-administered survey to 25 out of 30 teachers who taught classes between the second semester of 2023 and the first semester of 2024, and semi-structured interviews with 15 of them.
The article concludes that the stigmatizing effects of prison extend negatively to the university program in prisons, while the university experience mitigates these effects on the trajectories of alumni after incarceration.
