The first works of Michel Foucault, published in 1954, constitute a foundation-al moment in his intellectual career and allow us to glimpse the threads that, over time, will weave his mature thought. In that year two key texts appeared: Mental Illness and Personality and Ludwig Binswanger and Existential AnalysisBoth works are deeply marked by the influence of phenomenology, existential-ism and psychoanalysis, but they also reveal tensions that announce the archae-ological and genealogical turn that will characterize Foucauldian philosophy in the sixties and seventies. These manuscripts will offer an understanding of mental illness distinct from biological reductionism, underscoring the space that existential analysis opens up for capturing the subjective meaning of men-tal illness, which he will address years later in History of Madness, but which finds its antecedent here.
