Research on interpersonal relationships in the social well-being of institutionalized older adults arises from observations made at the “Instituto Estupiñán” Nursing Home in Latacunga (Cotopaxi, Ecuador). It was found that, although there are selective bonds that promote well-being, communication barriers and conflicts that lead to isolation predominate. The objective of the research is to identify how interpersonal relationships influence the social well-being of six older adults interviewed. This study takes a qualitative approach, with a descriptive-interpretative and non-experimental design, with the aim of understanding and analyzing interpersonal relationships in the social well-being of institutionalized older adults. A non-probability convenience sample of six older adults aged between 65 and 84 years was used, with specific inclusion criteria. The interview technique and a guide with pre-established questions were applied. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis assisted by the ATLAS-ti program, allowing for the organization, coding, and categorization of the information obtained. The findings show that the influence of interpersonal relationships is polarized: the support and trust placed in the caregiving and multidisciplinary staff have a positive impact, acting as the main source of support. In contrast, relationships with peers are marked by mistrust and conflict, negatively affecting social integration and encouraging voluntary isolation among some residents.
