When maternity is articulated through first-person writing, it ceases to be an object narrated from outside and becomes a site of enunciation. This article examines how Drifts (2023) by Kate Zambreno, The Argonauts(2018) by Maggie Nelson, and A Life’s Work (2023) by Rachel Cusk reconfigure maternity through embodied experience, in critical dialogue with its institutional and symbolic dimensions. Rather than abandoning these categories, the article proposes a shift: to think maternity as a condition of possibility, that is, as a grammar of creation. These writings expose the symbolic and material exclusions that shape maternity (time, labor, cultural legitimacy) while simultaneously producing forms of language that refuse to reduce the gestating body to function or limit. The central claim is that writing from maternity does not introduce a new literary theme, but transforms the very conditions of what can be said, by reinscribing the gestating body as a site of meaning, thought, and creation.
