In this text, we undertake a critical analysis of Nietzsche’s idea of the eternal return, which we understand as the culmination of nihilism. This is because, as we argue in the second section, the eternal return denies human temporality and, by doing so, abolishes once and for all the very question of meaning, of which not even its absence remains. With this absence of the absence of meaning, we understand that nihilism reaches its fullest development. In contrast to this, together with Saint Augustine and Ernst Jünger, we explore the possibility of a critique of the eternal return based on the concept of the return of the eternal. We address this in the third section, where we analyse the way in which eternity manifests itself in time as transcendence, something tangible in the experience of the instant. All of this is carried out with the intention of showing the anthropological root of hope as the meaning of temporality capable of contending with nihilism, in opposition to the immanent time of despair that, in our view, lies at the heart of the doctrine of the eternal return.
