This article investigates the semantic complexity and translational challenges of the German word über in the way it was used by some leading philosophers of the Continental tradition. Focusing on Nietzsche’s concept of the Übermensch, and subsequently on the essay featuring the debate between Ernst Jünger and Martin Heidegger, Über die Linie/Zur Seinsfrage, it examinates how different European translations have shaped the understanding of the term. By carefully considering the interplay between language, culture, and philosophical thought, the article seeks to provide a hermeneutic analysis of its meaning. Such investigation is tasked with elucidating the epistemological significance of the word, often connected with the challenging philosophical aim of providing an overcoming of the nihilistic existential crisis. The present study thus seeks to compare both the diverse translations and the differing interpretations of über, and to demonstrate how these align coherently within the broader discourse on nihilism. Although the word has always held significant philosophical relevance, it has seldom been analyzed in terms of its rendition across different European languages. Such an analysis, however, can be valuable for reflecting on the reception and interpretation of the term within various national philosophical traditions.
