This study focuses on a crucial part of the archives produced by the Portuguese Inquisition: the trials conducted between 1536 and 1821, a largely handwritten corpus totalizing more than 40,000 files. This research was conducted, on the one hand, on nearly 2,000 trials of the Lisbon Inquisition at the turn of the sixteenth century, and on the other hand, on several hundred others from the 16th to the 18th century, unveiling underknown printed matter. It aims to highlight the somewhat systematic presence of printed documents, as well as identifying their appearance and functions, in order to deepen our understanding of this ecclesiastical justice system—and in so doing emphasize its bureaucratic nature. It has also made it possible to locate new printed material from various sources, making these immense archives an unexpected repository bridging them with libraries and printing
