This critical review of Emily Thomas' monograph, Victoria Welby. Cambridge Elements (2023), seeks to establish Lady Welby as a metaphysical thinker beyond her renowned work in the philosophy of language and semiotics. The review praises the work as a triumph of archival research for systematically unearthing and reconstructing Welby's speculative metaphysics, highlighting her central thesis that “Movement” is the “supreme category” of reality, her nuanced panpsychism, and her radical anti-realist view of time as “translation”.
However, the review argues that the methodological separation of metaphysics from his theory of language is a ‘fundamental error’ that limits understanding of the depth of Welby's philosophical project. It is argued that Welby's metaphysics—including his ontology of Movement and his ‘levels’ of reality (Inorganic, Organic, Mind)—is, in essence, the application of his semiotic theory (significs) to an evolutionary cosmology. A key passage from the correspondence between Welby and C. S. Peirce on time is used to demonstrate that Welby's central metaphysical claim depends entirely on a semiolinguistic argument about the relationship between language, experience, and mental categories. The review concludes that, by imposing an anachronistic bifurcation, Thomas's book, while admirable for its scholarship, presents the body of Welby's thought but omits its semiotic heart, the ‘driving and governing’ force that gave life to her entire system.
