Although Kate Gordon is now an almost forgotten figure in philosophical historiography, she can be regarded as a pioneer of pragmatist aesthetics. This article argues that her aesthetic work, developed during the first decade of the twentieth century, deserves renewed attention because she was among the first philosophers to explicitly state that her aesthetic theory adopted a pragmatist perspective and to ask what it meant to apply the pragmatist method to aesthetics and the philosophy of art. Through a bibliographical study focused on her main writings, the paper reconstructs her conception of aesthetic experience, the relation between art and life, and the role of emotions in artistic experience. It also shows that many of the themes and concepts developed by Gordon anticipated ideas later associated with John Dewey and the pragmatist aesthetic tradition. Gordon should therefore be recognized as a fundamental precursor of pragmatist aesthetics.
