This article is an exploratory-descriptive study that arises from an interest to know how community gardens emerge in large to intermediate sized cities in the central zone of Chile. The investigation delves into the problems, motivations and objectives that lead to their formation, beginning with a historical analysis that outlines the emergence of urban community gardens in the 20th century. This is complemented with an empirical investigation of their development in the 21st century, based on a sample of twenty cur-rently active, self-managed urban community gardens. This allows us to understand the sociopolitical germination of urban community gardens, the significance of the rural-urban relationship embedded in them, and the agroecological shift they represent today, under-stood as a response to the conflicts of the so-called “Green Revolution” and the unregulated growth of the cities. From this perspective, the study frames community gardens as strategic factors in the contingency for the emergence of new paradigms of social transformation.
