The taxation of sustainable tourism in the Balearic Islands is based on the existence of the misnamed ‘ecotax’ or ‘tourist tax,’ implemented in two different phases. This paper analyses the legal framework of the current tax on tourist stays, approved in 2016, comparing it with its predecessor from 2001 and with other regional taxes that currently levy such taxes. It also addresses the potential creation of an optional local tax and a municipal surcharge, in order to draw appropriate conclusions regarding the scope and significance of the Balearic tax.
