The expansion and diversification of the Argentine university system has led to a sustained increase in the number of individuals with incomplete higher education participating in the labor market, in parallel with a greater incorporation of low-income sectors into higher education. This process raises the need to reassess the extent to which university education continues to operate as a vector of upward social mobility through improvements in labor income. The study draws on microdata from the Permanent Household Survey (EPH) produced by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC), structured according to the three waves of national university creation, with the aim of examining the temporal evolution of the economic returns associated with university education by different levels of educational completion, both in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area and in the country as a whole. The findings indicate that individuals whose highest reported educational level corresponds to incomplete higher education exhibit, on average, higher labor income than those who have only completed secondary education. This wage premium associated with incomplete higher education is more pronounced in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area, a context in which the territorial proximity of the new university institutions fostered a significant expansion in enrollment. It is therefore concluded that mere attendance at university, even without attaining a degree, is associated with an increase in the economic returns to education in the labor market.
