Artificial intelligence represents another stage in technological progress in which parliaments, as public authorities, are participating in order to avoid becoming obsolete and outdated in an increasingly complex environment. It is clear that the growing development of AI is creating high expectations, although it should replace tasks and not the people who perform them. However, all technical developments require regulatory and ethical guidelines to channel their use, as demonstrated by the approval of a variety of different regulations aimed at this end, including the European Union's Artificial Intelligence Regulation, which parliaments will undoubtedly have to comply with. Parliamentary regulations are still a long way from advancing the regulatory modernization of the functions of parliament, but efforts must be made to preserve its institutional role in society and to achieve greater efficiency in its work. Strengthening their functions, including through AI, will result in the development of their oversight role, improving the processing and exercise of control mechanisms. This improvement must obviously include respect for the rights of those who may be affected and, of course, the protection of personal data.
