This paper addresses a topic that has received limited attention in local literature: the cognitive biases affecting forensic experts in criminal justice and the strategies available to address this issue. The aim is to initiate a reflection on this issue and to promote future research on the subject to adequately address it. It begins by diagnosing how these biases can significantly undermine the quality, objectivity, and reliability of expert opinions and conclusions. Next, the paper briefly reviews strategies to mitigate these effects and reduce the risk of erroneous decisions, including strengthening the admissibility controls of expert evidence, facilitating effective cross examination of experts in court, and enhancing the documentation and content of written forensic reports. Additionally, it discusses institutional measures, such as the establishment of independent forensic laboratories and improvements in the regulations and international accreditation standards for forensic institutions to ensure the quality of their reports.
