The relationship between the majoritarian principle and equality produces majorities and minorities of different kinds (political and substantive), governed by different logics (quantitative and qualitative, respectively), but reconcilable because they also fulfil specific functions (the quantitative one, enabling state action based on the will of the majority; the qualitative one, controlling this action and the differ-entiation between groups decided by the majority). This article raises the question of whether these logics end up, however, intertwining, which would give rise to major-ities and minorities not only quantitative and qualitative but also identitarian. In order to answer this question, I analyse the evolution of the idea of equality in the light of the majoritarian principle (the transition from formal to material, and from material to identitarian equality), as well as its repercussions both on the majori-tarian principle and on the constitutional State within which this relationship takes place.
