The present study examines the legal evolution of the procurator, from its origins within the domestic and private-law sphere, to its full incorporation into the administrative structure of the imperial State and its reception within the Compilation of Justinian. In the course of this development, particular attention is devoted to its legal nature as either a negotiorum gestor or a mandatary, in the exercise of their functions within the field of private law– bearing in mind the complex path of direct representation in Roman law –, up to its legal characterisation as a civil servant, vested with specific competences throughout both the High and the Late Empire.
