As Cuba confronts mounting domestic and external pressures, the end of its authoritarian regime appears increasingly near, though the nature and outcome of any transition remain uncertain. A post-authoritarian transition on the island would entail extensive institutional rebuilding, the implementation of transitional justice, and a redefinition of the armed forces’ role in political life. Examining comparable experiences in Europe and Latin America can therefore provide important insights into the opportunities and risks that such a process would entail.
