In the rivalry between China and the United States, middle powers still possess valuable strategic assets, but these alone do not guarantee autonomy. Security and prosperity depend on integration into broader systems of protection, technology, finance, and markets. The alternative, therefore, is not to multiply coalitions but to align with the great power best positioned to protect them from their most pressing threats. Such a strategy limits the pursuit of absolute autonomy, yet it preserves the capacity to survive and prosper in an increasingly hostile international environment.
