The cancellation of works of art on the grounds of their sexist or racist content has given rise to a controversial debate that reveals the social significance of artistic representations. Feminist and postcolonial studies, as well as the artistic avant-gardes, have highlighted the political conditions shaping the production of representations that contribute to the perpetuation of power relations. However, criticism, although necessary, can be complemented by transforming the social conditions under which representations are produced. Drawing on Spivak’s distinction between political representation (Vertretung) and artistic representation (Darstellung), this article examines the importance of creating spaces in which historically marginalized groups can represent themselves. To this end, it analyzes the artistic practices developed at Hull House as a case of expanding forms of artistic participation, as well as their continuation in contemporary projects such as Mujeres Creando.
