This article will examine the social implications of the cancellation of cultural works with concepts granted by the Frankfurt School. Instead of focusing on the morality or legitimacy of the act of canceling, the article will analyze its effects in three different spheres: ideology, identity, and culture management. In the first section, it will be argued that the phenomenon of cancellation operates within an “epistemological” conception of ideology, by assuming that certain values are definitive and therefore those that must be reflected in cultural works. In the second section, cancellation will be linked to an identity thought that, instead of seeing the world as a conflictive field of contradictions that allow progress towards new social forms, sees it as a place in which closed and conclusive ideals must be inserted. The third section will examine the way in which cancellation contributes to the administration of culture, homogenizing the content of artistic works and eliminating those that are uncomfortable, instead of allowing their critical interpretation. The article will conclude by proposing an alternative path for progressive struggles: instead of canceling, common sense must be transformed without eliminating contradictions, and new values and ideals must be brought to the institutions.
