The final years of the 14th century and the early years of the 15th century were particularly difficult for the inhabitants of the Sierra de Aroche, in what is now the province of Huelva. In 1383, a bloody dynastic conflict broke out between the kingdoms of Castile and Portugal, lasting until 1411. During this period, the Seville authorities organised various military operations aimed at establishing a solid defence on the mountainous border with Portugal and becoming an active agent in the war. This led to large investments of economic and human resources by the Seville council, with some operations combining the defence of its territory with the border war, and even demonstrating the great military capacity of the Seville council by successfully occupying and maintaining some border towns in the Portuguese Alentejo.
