Language tourism aimed at learning Spanish as an alternative to mass tourism and its unfavorable consequences in a touristic destinations is an emerging research topic, particularly in Spain, but the findings are scarce in Latin America. The objective was to analyze the accommodation patterns and frequency of food service visits to language tourism in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. An exploratory survey, an analysis of the gastronomic offer, and a digital mapping were carried out. The median stay was 21 days (three times that of conventional tourism), with the majority staying in tourist apartments and shared houses with local families. The highest frequency was at Mexican cuisine restaurants, taco shops, and home-cooked food bars—local businesses—outside of tourist corridors. Furthermore, the tourist's country of origin is significantly associated with the days of stay and the type of accommodation contracted. Thus, language tourism operates outside the tourist bubbles characteristic of the all-inclusive service model predominant in the context studied. The findings suggest that Language Tourism contributes to the development of local economy by promoting consumption in local enterprises, while avoiding support for businesses that belong to national and transnational corporations, which are also present in Playa del Carmen.
