This article analyzes the transformation of Colchane, a border town located in Chile on the border with Bolivia, into a laboratory of migratory governmentality between 2020 and 2025. Using a multi-sited ethnographic approach, semi-structured interviews with key actors and participant observation across three phases of fieldwork, the study examines the control regimes implemented by the Chilean state in collaboration with international organizations and ngos. Three successive reconfigurations of the border space are identified: a space of health immunization, a space of humanitarian control and a militarized border, accompanied by migrant subjectivities—victim, beneficiary and detainee—that coexist with practices of freedom. The article contributes theoretically by linking studies of migration and border regimes with Foucauldian governmentality, bringing to light micro-practices of control and subjectivation that macrostructural analyses often overlook. Although the study of a single border node limits generalizability, it is argued that Colchane condenses and anticipates broader regional dynamics of control over forced mobility in South America.
