The objective of this study is to analyze the factors influencing firms’ decisions to invest in research and development (R&D) and to examine their relationship with business performance. A quantitative and explanatory approach is applied using data from the “Survey on Expenditure and Personnel in Research and Development (R&D), 2021”. To achieve this, different supervised learning algorithms—logistic regression, Decision Tree, support vector machines (SVM), and neural networks—are compared in order to identify the determinants of R&D investment and assess their predictive performance. The results show that the Decision Tree model provides the best overall performance, highlighting the importance of factors such as sales, firm size, and human capital. In addition, a positive association between R&D investment and firm performance is observed. This study contributes to the literature by integrating machine learning techniques into the economic analysis of innovation, demonstrating their usefulness in capturing non-linear relationships in business decision-making. It is concluded that R&D should be considered a strategic investment for firms.
