When I was a senior cadet, I used to visit my future father in law whose family had lived in Maria from time immemorial.
He told me about some spots of land, by the “Arroyo Salado”, where he unearthed skulls, bones and the remaining of military accoutrements, while ploughing. He asked me whether I knew about the battle that had taken place in the outskirts of Maria, I had no the slightest idea about it. Years later, I read a piece of news informing that, during the works to transform the road connecting Maria with Zaragoza into a Highway, a burial site had been found, the reporter wrote that it was, most likely, a mass grave for those executed by Franco´s Army during the Civil war, a completely mistaken interpretation. The Eureka moment came when I read the name of a Battle on the Triumph Arch in Paris. There was no doubt, after “Sarragosse” I could read “Maria- Belchite”. There was a battle indeed, and an important one. Being curious by nature, I decided to fi nd out the details of the event. Now in 2026, it might be possible to fi nd an answer to the minute details of the campaign using AI (Artificial Intelligence). I tried that, but the result has been disappointing. I have followed a simple approach: reading the accounts written by the actors (Suchet´memoires) , analyzing the old maps of the battle, and a visit to the battlefi elds (on foot, bicycle and by car) trying to understand the little details that explain the campaign, and the battles from a soldier´s perspective, different from the vision given by AI and by some historical narratives
