Handguns have often been treated as a minor, almost accessory element. However, their evolution clearly reveals how technology, logistics, and ways of fighting change over time.

This article reconstructs how the Army incorporated the revolver between 1855 and 1898, based on regulations and technical documentation. From the first issues in Cuba to the coexistence of systems and models, the text shows the constant tension between what was approved on paper and what could actually be manufactured, maintained, and supplied. The “ammunition-based standardization” introduced with the 1884 cartridge model attempted to organize the inventory without establishing a single weapon. Rather than resolving the issue, it set the stage for a crisis that, by 1898, had already become an operational problem
