With the Donald Trump administration’s stark rejection of multilateral rules, norms, and institutions, the postwar order shaped by u.s. leadership is disappearing.
But other countries do not have to be passive bystanders. By rebuilding or recrafting the institutions that matter most, they can do much to maintain stability, address global problems, and protect their members against crises. If they do not, many countries may find themselves more exposed than ever, scrambling to protect narrow, short-term interests without leverage or influence in a more dangerous world.
