The tectonic shift in economic relations between China, the United States and Latin America in the 21st century constitutes perhaps the most important geopolitical transformation in the Western Hemisphere since the Cold War. After years of collecting information on investments, trade, aid and loans of both powers in the region, the pattern is unequivocal: China has economically displaced the United States in countries that represent 60% of Latin America’s population. This new reality demands a rethinking of established paradigms in relation to hemispheric geopolitics.
