En tiempos de incertidumbre, la gente busca analogías en la historia, y la favorita de hoy es la Guerra fría. Pero el periodo actual es más peligroso. Podemos encontrar más motivos de reflexión en el imperialismo de finales del siglo XIX y en las economías de suma cero del periodo de entreguerras. Ahora, como entonces, las potencias revisionistas obtienen territorios por la fuerza y el orden internacional se resquebraja. Quizá la similitud más sorprendente y preocupante sea que hoy, como en las épocas anteriores, Estados Unidos está tentado a centrar la atención en sí mismo.
In times of uncertainty, people reach for historical analogies, and today’s favorite is the Cold war. But the current period it is more dangerous. We can find more food for thought in the imperialism of the late nineteenth century and the zero-sum economies of the interwar period. Now, as then, revisionist powers are acquiring territory through force, and the international order is breaking down. But perhaps the most striking and worrying similarity is that today, as in the previous eras, the United States is tempted to turn inward.
